Starkville Utilities, Terry Kemp Column: Storm Preparedness

Make sure storm-preparedness is on your summer to-do list

When severe weather is in the forecast, what’s your plan of action to keep your family and home safe?

That’s a good question to ask as our region braces for hurricane season, which can bring challenges even to our area. Storm-preparedness is a year-round effort for Starkville Utilities. Every day, we are taking steps to keep power flowing safely, reliably and efficiently for customers.

But service disruptions can be unavoidable during severe weather. This summer, we’re encouraging customers to have an emergency plan in place to keep their families safe and ensure basic needs are met if utilities and other services are temporarily unavailable.

A great place to start your preparation checklist is Ready.gov, which provides helpful tips and resources for all types of emergencies, including severe weather. You can also sign up for local Code Red emergency notifications on the Oktibbeha County EMA website.

As part of our Renew Principle, Starkville Utilities is continuously looking for ways to improve our performance during normal operations and storm response efforts. Tree trimming and preventive maintenance are examples of proactive strategies we use to prevent or lessen the severity of outages when storms strike.

When it comes to severe weather, you can be proactive, too. Let’s work together to make storm preparedness for our community a top priority during all seasons. In the meantime, we hope you have a safe, enjoyable and relaxing summer.
