Home Energy Workshops Slated for March 29, 30

Learn do-it-yourself strategies to lower energy use and save money

If you’re interested in improving energy efficiency and reducing utility bills, make plans to attend one of Starkville Utilities’ free Home Energy Workshop on Wednesday, March 29, or Thursday, March 30.

The interactive sessions are slated for two locations and times to provide more opportunities for local residents to participate:

  • Wednesday, March 29
    9 to 10:30 a.m. Starkville Housing Authority - 101 West Wood Street
  • Thursday, March 30
11 a.m. to 12 noon Discovery Center- 1504 Louisville Street
“We’ve received positive feedback about EnergyRight workshops and are expanding the program to increase community-wide participation,” said Edward Kemp, general manager of Starkville Utilities. “It adds value to our service when we help customers gain more control over their utility budgets, and many of the energy-saving tips are either no-cost or low-cost.”

During the workshops, utility experts provide step-by-step guidance on how to make homes more energy efficient through strategies such as weatherstripping, insulation, HVAC maintenance and lighting management. Programs also include a slideshow about home energy basics and Q&A sessions. Participants who complete home energy surveys will receive free energy starter kits valued at $25.

In addition to the adult workshops, Starkville Utilities is partnering with after-school programs Brickfire and SK8 Odyssey to offer their students an opportunity to learn how they can save energy at home through the Energy Monsters program.

Last year, Starkville Utilities’ Home Energy Workshops helped residential customers save 12,586 kilowatt-hours of electricity, earning second place out of a field of 153 local power companies in Tennessee Valley Authority’s EnergyRight Top Performer Award program.

Through its EnergyRight partnership with TVA, Starkville Utilities offers several energy-saving incentives and solutions for residential customers, including free home energy audits.
