Starkville Utilities Urges Customers to Beat the Heat

Utility offers smart steps for a cooler, more affordable summer

As temperatures climb across Mississippi, Starkville Utilities is launching its Beat the Heat initiative with a focus on helping customers stay comfortable while holding the line on rising energy costs during the peak of summer.

“Summer should be about enjoying time with family—not worrying about your power bill,” said General Manager Edward Kemp. “That’s why we are doing everything we can to support our customers during the hottest months of the year. Beat the Heat is about practical steps, real savings and strategies that can lower energy costs year-round.”

With air conditioning accounting for the largest share of seasonal energy use, even small changes at home can make a meaningful difference. Starkville Utilities encourages customers to take a proactive approach now before the highest temperatures arrive.

“Every home is different, but the goal is the same—keep cool air in and hot air out,” Kemp added. “When customers make a few smart adjustments, it can ease the strain on their system and their budget.”

Starkville Utilities recommends these easy, effective ways to manage energy use and reduce costs:

  • Find and seal air leaks. Small gaps around doors, windows and ductwork let cool air escape. Sealing those leaks can significantly improve efficiency.
  • Set your thermostat wisely. Aim for 78°F when you’re home and a few degrees higher when you’re away. Even small adjustments can lead to noticeable savings over time.
  • Use fans to your advantage. Ceiling and portable fans help circulate air, allowing you to stay comfortable at higher thermostat settings. Just remember to turn them off when you leave the room.
  • Block out the sun. Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day, especially on south- and west-facing windows.
  • Keep your system running efficiently. Check and replace air filters regularly to keep airflow strong and energy use in check.
  • Shift heat-producing activities. Run dishwashers, dryers and ovens in the early morning or late evening to avoid adding extra heat during peak hours.
  • Upgrade where it counts. Energy-efficient lighting and appliances not only use less electricity—they also generate less heat inside your home.
  • Be mindful of standby power. Unplug unused electronics or use power strips to cut down on hidden energy use.

These tips are just a starting point—there are many more ways to save energy and money while maintaining comfort and supporting community-wide grid stability.
