As home improvement projects and outdoor work rev up for spring, Starkville Utilities is reminding residents and contractors to take one important step before digging: call 811.
Whether installing a fence, planting landscaping or starting a larger construction project, contacting 811 before breaking ground helps prevent damage to underground utility lines and reduces the risk of injury, service outages and costly repairs.
“Calling 811 is one of the simplest ways our customers can help protect themselves and their neighbors,” said General Manager Edward Kemp. “A quick call before you dig can prevent serious accidents and keep essential services running without interruption.”
Mississippi law requires anyone planning to dig to contact 811 at least three business days in advance or submit a request online at call811.com. Once notified, utility providers will mark the location of underground lines using standardized color codes:
After lines are marked, residents and contractors should use caution when digging near those areas and adjust plans as needed to avoid potential conflicts.
Starkville Utilities also follows the 811 notification process before performing any work on water, sewer or electrical infrastructure, reinforcing its commitment to safety and reliability.
If hiring a contractor, customers are encouraged to confirm that an 811 request has been submitted prior to the start of work.
“Taking a few minutes to call 811 can prevent hours of disruption and expensive repairs,” Kemp added. “It’s a small step that makes a big difference for the entire community.”
