Starkville Utilities Launches Final Phase of Pole Inspection Program

Proactive inspections keep electric service safe, resilient, and reliable

Starkville Utilities is stepping up its commitment to reliable electric service with the third and final phase of a citywide pole inspection program, launching Dec. 15. This phase focuses on the utility’s service area south of Highway 12 and continues a proactive approach to maintaining a safe, resilient electrical system.

Osmose Utilities Services, Inc., will perform the inspections, which are expected to wrap up in spring 2026. Some inspections may require temporary access to customer property to ensure a thorough and accurate review.

“Our goal is to prevent service issues before they happen,” said Edward Kemp, general manager of Starkville Utilities. “Osmose teams and vehicles are clearly marked and use cones and signage to keep everyone safe. They also carry a letter from Starkville Utilities so residents know exactly who they are and why they’re here.”

The final phase completes inspections on more than 6,000 poles in Starkville Utilities’ service area. Previous phases covered areas north of Highway 182 and between Highway 182 and Highway 12.

During inspections, every pole and its components are inventoried for the utility’s geographic information system, and all lines and hardware are visually examined to identify issues that could affect service. Any concerns found will be promptly addressed by Starkville Utilities.

Electric service will not be interrupted, and updates on inspection schedules and locations will be shared on the utility’s social media channels. Residents who notice a potential hazard or have questions about the inspection program are urged to call Starkville Utilities at 662-323-3133.

“This initiative is all about staying ahead—identifying potential problems early and keeping electricity flowing reliably for our customers,” said Kemp. “By taking a proactive approach, we can address issues before they affect service and continue building a stronger, more resilient electric system for the whole community.”

Starkville Utilities is a municipally owned and operated electric and water utility, serving more than 14,000 residences, businesses and industries in Starkville as well as the state’s largest institution of higher learning, Mississippi State University.
